According to an article published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology in October 2014, the world's first patent for a submersible pump unit driven by a linear motor was issued in the United States in December 1918. Its inventor was engineer Robert E. Newcomb.

Over the next 100 years, the best engineers of leading manufacturers of submersible equipment worked on the development and implementation of this technology. But until now all existing developments haven’t found mass application due to low reliability, efficiency and complex applications.
